Ingredients:
For the Macaroni and Cheese:
1 pound elbow macaroni or your preferred pasta shape
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups whole milk
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or you can use mozzarella or Monterey Jack for a milder flavor)
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Topping:
1 cup breadcrumbs or panko
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional for extra flavor)
1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
Instructions:
Cook the Pasta:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Make the Cheese Sauce:
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is bubbly and lightly golden.
Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar and Gruyère cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth.
Stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Combine Pasta and Cheese Sauce:
Add the cooked pasta to the cheese sauce, stirring to combine and ensure all the pasta is well-coated with the sauce.
Prepare the Topping:
In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs or panko with the melted butter, grated Parmesan cheese (if using), and dried parsley (if using). Mix until the breadcrumbs are evenly coated.
Assemble and Bake:
Preheat your oven to 375°F .
Transfer the macaroni and cheese to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
Sprinkle the breadcrumb or panko mixture evenly over the top of the macaroni and cheese.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the cheese sauce is bubbly.
Serve:
Let the macaroni and cheese cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
