Basic Fruit Crisp
A fruit crisp is a dessert featuring a layer of sweetened fruit filling topped with a crumbly mixture of flour, oats, sugar, and butter. When baked, the topping becomes golden and crunchy, providing a delightful contrast to the soft, juicy fruit underneath.
Ingredients
Fruit Filling:
4 cups fresh fruit (apples, peaches, berries, cherries, etc.), peeled, cored, and sliced if necessary
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for extra thickening)
1 tsp vanilla extract
Crisp Topping:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
Directions
Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Prepare the Fruit Filling:
In a large bowl, combine the fruit, sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch (if using), and vanilla extract. Mix well to coat the fruit evenly.
Transfer the fruit mixture to a greased 9x9-inch baking dish or a similarly sized baking dish.
Make the Crisp Topping:
In another bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Mix until well combined.
Stir in the melted butter until the mixture is crumbly and the dry ingredients are well coated.
Assemble the Crisp:
Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping over the fruit filling in the baking dish.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly.
Cool and Serve:
Allow the crisp to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
